DOM in the long arc of environmental science: looking back and thinking ahead

چکیده

Abstract Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a heterogeneous mixture of compounds that produced through both microbial degradation and abiotic leaching solid phase matter, by wide range metabolic processes in algae higher plants. DOM ubiquitous throughout the hydrologic cycle plays an important role watershed management for drinking water supply as well many aspects aquatic ecology geochemistry. Due to its wide-ranging effects natural waters analytical challenges, focal research questions regarding have varied since 1920s. A standard catchment-scale model has emerged describe environmental controls on concentrations. Modest concentrations are found atmospheric deposition, large increases occur throughfall shallow soil flow paths, variable surface largely result extent which paths encounter deeper mineral soils, wetlands or organic-rich riparian soils. Both production consumption but appear frequently balance, resulting relatively constant with distance downstream most streams rivers. Across biomes concentration composition flowing driven direct inputs channels, high levels can be rivers from tropics poles. Seven central challenges opportunities study should frame ongoing research. These include maintaining establishing long-term records changes fluxes over time, capitalizing use sensors short-term dynamics systems, integrating full carbon into understanding dynamics, evasion greenhouse gases inland waters, unraveling enigma dissolved nitrogen, documenting gross versus net fluxes, moving beyond emphasis functional ecological significance evolutionary environments.

The acquisition of sociolinguistic variation: looking back and thinking ahead

Although developmental sociolinguistics is a relatively under-researched field, several studies have described children’s use of sociolinguistic variables and some have suggested theoretical accounts for the learning mechanisms underpinning their acquisition. Taking a historical point of view, this paper aims firstly to provide an exhaustive review of the studies focused on phonological variabl...

Stunting in Nepal: looking back, looking ahead†

Nepal hasmade impressive gains in health and nutrition despite being in a state of political, economic and demographic transition. According to the Nepal Demographic Health Surveys, stunting in Nepal has fallen from 57% in 2001 to 41% in 2011, an annual decline of 1.7 percentage points. A 3.9% annual reduction is, however, required to achieve the global target of 40% fewer stunted children by 2...
